Science
Freshmen all take the lab course Marine Biology. Ms. Cheryl McDonald and Ms. Clare Ng teach this course.
Sophomores all take the lab course Marine Chemistry which is taught by Ms. Liza Baskin-Arboleta or Ms. Jessica Godkin.
Juniors all take Marine Physics, taught by either Mr. John Valente or by Ms. Godkin. It should be noted that all juniors are required to complete an individual junior research project built on the research designs that they had begun during their sophomore Marine Chemistry course.
Senior electives in science include:
- Oceanography and Science Field Research, taught by Mrs. Barbara Boyd;
- AP Physics, taught by Mr. Valente;
- Survey of the Marine Environment, taught by Ms. Ng;
- Environmental Science, taught by Ms. Ng.
Those students taking Oceanography and Science Field Research are expect to complete a college-level research paper during their senior year. Proposals for senior year oceanographic research are made by students during their junior year. Students are expected to work on their research project over the summer between junior and senior year.
Students in all science classes enjoy M.A.S.T.'s unique floating classroom aboard its research vessel, the Blue Sea, of which Mr. Bruce Boyd is captain. In general Marine Chemistry classes have vessel trips on Mondays, Marine Physics classes have vessel trips on Tuesdays, Marine Biology classes have vessel trips on Wednesdays, and Oceanography classes have vessel trips on Thursdays. Some weeks, instructors may make arrangements to swap "vessel days." For safety's sake, the vessel does not go out in bad weather as determined by Captain Boyd. Cancellations of vessel trips are announced the morning of the scheduled trip.
Seniors who go on to study at one of the colleges with which M.A.S.T. has articulation agreements may receive college credit for taking the Oceanography course.
